What mom doesn’t stress over their kid’s birthday party? I had other moms pressuring me all the time about Sutton’s first birthday party… “What is the theme?” “Have you bought anything yet?” “Have you set the date?” “What are you getting him?” “Where will it be?” I’m sitting here like HE IS ONE people calm down! Another one of my mom friends said it perfectly, “The first birthday is really for you!” Ding Ding Ding…. but the first birthday is super special; it brings back so many memories of giving birth and meeting our little guy for the first time. I did want it to be special, but with the craziness of spring training and not sure where we would be, planning Sutton’s first birthday party was super stressful! We ended up planning it a month early so our friends and family could help to celebrate our little man.
I chose a luau theme because I wanted it to be different, and its a dream of mine to take Sutton to Hawaii (specifically the Disney resort). We want to wait until he can swim to enjoy all that Hawaii has to offer, and I can relax a little knowing he can swim. I’m not a creative person; God did not bless me with that gene so thank you Pinterest and Amazon Prime! If your planning your kid’s birthday party and need supplies, Amazon Prime will be your best friend. I found everything I needed delivered right to my door step. In my opinion, the first birthday is all about the decor. So, I wanted to make sure I had the Hawaiian feel going on.

I purchased the grass table skirt, hanging pineapples, flower crepes hanging down, the pineapples on the table and the scattered flowers on the table all on Amazon. I found all the platters and caddy with the utensils at the Dollar Tree. The plates and napkins came from Ultimate Party. The “one” balloon is from the dollar section at Target (maybe cost $3), and we ended up using it for a photo session of Sutton out on the deck later.
It was raining the day of Sutton’s party so we decided to decorate the garage and have some of the party out there instead of our deck. I bought the leis, “Aloha banner” and other hanging flower garland from Amazon and the tiki torches from Ultimate Party.
It’s always fun to have games for the kids to play. So, I ordered a pineapple piñata off Etsy from the shop “The Perfect Piñata.” It turned out super cute. I bought way too much candy though. The piñata ended up being smaller than I thought on the inside which was perfect for a 1 year old birthday!

I wanted Scott and I to dress the part. My dress is from Adeline Clothing, and Scott’s shirt is from a thrift store in Gautier, MS that cost a $1 (gotta love a deal)! Sutton’s 1 outfit is Mudpie (I went back and forth on the 1 jon jon or something Hawaiian)

I think its always neat when people do food and drinks to match the theme of the birthday party! So, I hopped on Pinterest and started researching Hawaiian party foods and drinks. I found a super easy luau punch, pineapples with sausage, Hawaiian roll ham sliders and fruit! I also had The party was at 2 so I just wanted to do little snacks! The cake design was absolute perfection; it was exactly what I asked for and matched the theme exactly. Not to mention, it was so good! If you are in the Hattiesburg, MS area you have to order from Home Bake Candy Shoppe. It is seriously a hole in the wall, and I’m pretty sure they take your order on a sticky note but the cakes are to die for!
So, lets talk SMASH CAKE!!! Since the cake would be “smashed,” I wasn’t going to spend a lot of money on it. I went to our local grocery store, Corner Market, to pick out the size and what I wanted it to look like. I guess I just didn’t think to get a small cake; I literally bought a cake that would probably feed 20 people (don’t do this for a first birthday party). I wanted a blue ombre cake and they put rosettes on it. I was worried it would be too girly, but it worked and they discounted it for me because it wasn’t what I asked for! Sutton absolutely loved it so the rosettes didn’t even matter anyways!
Birthday parties can be stressful to plan for, but it was worth it in the end. I see a Disney trip for Sutton’s 2nd or 3rd birthday (that should be less stressful right?) I had fun with the Hawaiian theme it was super easy and cute. After the party, I was like well it’s over and I spent all that money. Good thing is you can always sale birthday party decor. Our decor is up for sale y’all if interested.
I hope y’all enjoyed reading about Sutton’s first birthday.
Until next time…
XOXO,
HC
